Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
I normally like Wrighty, but think he's way off the mark here!

Criticism of Manchester City and England winger Raheem Sterling is motivated by racism, says former Arsenal striker Ian Wright.

Sterling, 23, has faced frequent media disapproval, most recently for a tattoo of a rifle on his leg but also for purchasing clothes from Primark and buying his mother a house.

He was also criticised over his World Cup performances for England in Russia.

"How many people do you see get the criticism Sterling gets?" Wright said.

"The football criticism is something every player has to deal with, but what he gets I don't see any other footballer getting," former England forward Wright added on BBC Radio 5 live's Monday Night Club.

"They don't get that stick because for whatever reason they don't rub up the people in the corridors of power the wrong way. I think there is an agenda against him.

"There is an element of people at high end of the media who want to keep that guy down. Simple.

"When you look at the wave of criticism that he takes, there is a certain amount of racism towards it - what else can it be?

"They are picking on him because of the the background he has come from and they want to keep him down, drag him back down. They don't want him to continue to be a success.

"People say you are playing the racism card, but you give me a good reason why Raheem Sterling gets the stick he gets for just being a footballer."

◾'It was all a dream': Raheem Sterling for The Players' Tribune

Sterling received consistently low ratings on the BBC Sport website's Player Rater tool during the World Cup. His average rating was 4.66 - leaving him above only Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck.

During the tournament in Russia, Sterling wrote a blog post for The Players' Tribune in which he said he no longer worries about the media "picking on him".

Ex-Chelsea striker Chris Sutton, also speaking on 5 live, said: "I think the outside stuff did affect his World Cup performances."

He added: "I don't understand it because last season for City he really matured into a top player. He was one of the reasons why they were so devastating.

"There seems to be an element of people in this country who delight in kicking him and I don't get it."

You could be right Kronic, but I feel it started before he was clearly shit for England, but then again it just keeps going which could be what you say.
I would still keep him starting for England, he will come good.

He gets stick because he's fucking shit whenever he plays for England. It's really that fucking simple.

Sterling is criticised far too much, what the reason is I do not know, but when something is wrong or odd, people try and explain it. I would agree race may be factor.
Sterling is a good player, I have always enjoyed seeing him play. I can see why Southgate insists, he can make England the exciting attacking team he wants England to be.

I live in south africa so dont know about any media frenzy or general public discourse regarding sterling.

All i can say is that i could not understand why Southgate persists with playing him where he does for england. His international form is beyond awful.

The race card is pathetic. Especially as most the team are not white anyway.

Kane missed a sitter as well, literally a yard or so away from goal.
Also, 3 of his goals were penalties, one was a massive deflection and I think only 2 were 'normal' goals in open play. (header and a tap in). Despite getting (what is probably the moodiest golden boot ever) he didnt have a great tournament either really. Considering how he performs for his club.

Sometimes Sterling doesn't work well in the England set up for the same reason that lots of English players have been shit for england (Gerrard, Lampard etc..)

Mainly because lots of england stars rely on foreign players around them to make them shine. We dont have Silva, DeBruyne etc.. making runs beyond Sterling creating space.

I think all England midfielders have suffered with the fact that the other midfielders they play with are just not as good as their club team mates.

If you look at city play, there is always 2 options for sterling in front of him or to the side. They play triangles all day. The work rate is ridiculous. Its the same for Liverpool with players like Salah.

But when they play in their international teams the same setup just isnt there. Same with Argentina and Messi.
I think Sterling suffers more because even though he is the second striker/forward he's the fastest and makes more runs than Kane and gets in more opportunities and the pressure of being the only outlet for england must be draining (unlike in Man City where he is just 1 of many forward/strikers on the pitch).

Also, Sterling (as someone else pointed out) is getting stick firstly because of how he left liverpool and that agent of his rubbed alot of the national press the wrong way. And since then they've just been out to get him. And as he doesnt break they just keep at him. Maybe they think he can handle it (which he has to be fair).

The reality is they've tried to make him in to a characature of a footballer (lots of money, not bright etc..) in order to sell papers. I'm not sure its out and out racism really. Probably didnt start like that at all. But as it goes on its getting so silly you have to think give it a rest and let the young man live.

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
My main thing with Sterling is that often he'll do the hard and tricky part, but then never seems to have learned when to release the ball to another player.

At Man City that's fine because he does offer a direct approach, takes players on which fans like to see, and if he fails to release the ball and it ends up with them losing procession 30 seconds later they'd have got the ball back again against the majority of opponents they play.

Playing for England against any decent opposition and he and the team don't have that luxury.

Talking about this.

I thinm Sterling is unfairly criticsed and that raises the race card. Would a white footballer be the subject of the same negative shit from so much of the media.

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
I would say he gets critized because he left Liverpool in the manner he did and although decent for man city is absolute dog shit for England (although by no means the first).

He also earns about 20 times more than Dennis bergkamp did and he doesn't even play the same sport as DB in comparison.

I was trying to make the point that the criticisms weren't racist in and off themselves but rather, in my opinion, they were aimed at him at least in part due to his race.

Only a black ex pro would make up and try to play the easy 2018 racist card . Cunt.

What’s his colour got to do with him not scoring many for England?

And if he’d have squared to Harry Kane we’ have probably played a WC final.

Anyone here, or anywhere else believing this utter bollocks is a cunt.

Everything any white man says or does is racist and everything any non-white man is non-racist.

This is 2018.

I agree the criticisms may be a bit ridiculous sometimes but where are the outrageous racial elements?

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
I haven’t seen all the criticism but some of seems a bit nonsensical ( buying his Mum a house? What?) and I guess he has become the lazy easy target in some quarters.
But that said most is because he has been frustrating for England especially in regards to putting away chances.

Why has he been worse for England than Man CIty?
Can’t imagine why playing with Eric Dire and Jordan Henderson should be ANY different to playing with David Silva and K DeBruyne

I think it is racism from certain sections of the Media.

He isn't criticised just because people wanted Rashford to start instead.

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
Surface, Sterling is an attacking winger, Heskey was more of a central striker.

Silly comparison.

Hence the criticism. Nothing to do with race.
